Treatments

[Kriyakalpa]

In Ayurveda, various specialized therapeutic procedures for eye disease have been described in the name of kriyakalpa. Just as panchakarma is the foundation for general whole-body treatment similarly netra kriyakalpas are the foundation for Ayurvedic treatment of eye diseases.  They are modulated to suit the structural peculiarities and different disease conditions of the eye. These local therapies are unique and each does their function in a different way. They allow for direct action of medicine on the ocular tissues bypassing the systemic metabolism, permitting the monitoring of the contact time between the tissue and the medicine and increasing the bio-availability of the herbs.

Tarpana/Nethra Vasthi

Tarpana or Nethra Vasthi is a Kriya Kalpa procedure that provides nourishment to the eyes. Here the patient is made to lie in supine position and medicated ghee is kept irrigated in the eyes for a stipulated period of time using a boundary made up of black gram flour.

Putapaka

Putapaka is performed after Tarpana and involves irrigating the eyes with concentrated medicated juices extracted by heating a bolus of herbs along with meat.

Seka

Seka is pouring continuous stream of medicated decoction over eyes for a prespecified period of time.

Ashchotana (medicated eye drops)

Anjana (Collerium)

Pindi (fastening medicated bolus to the eyes)

Bidalaka (application of paste of medicines over the closed eyes up to eyelashes)

Apart from the Kriyakalpas, we also perform other treatments such as Shiro Vasthi and Nasya at Sudarshanam to manage certain systemic conditions affecting the eye.
